Like many of you, I've been hearing about this whole Anthony Weiner thing.Crazy isn't it? I mean a guy decides to show his johnson to some women via Twitter. Gasp! How dare he! You've been a naught boy, Mr. Weiner - okay maybe that wasn't delivered properly but I digress. This is bad news if you are a progressive; really bad news. He's a top politician, known for fighting the good fight, Republicans want him out, and it seems as though Democrats want him out as well. There are a few things I would like to bring to everyone's attention before passing judgment.
Democrats, I think you've seen this movie before. Remember a guy named William Jefferson Clinton? Remember when he was receiving top service from Monica Lewinski during his tenure? Remember how absurd you thought it was to impeach your President; who was responsible for doing so many great things for our country? Well maybe you didn't think it was THAT absurd - you let the impeachment pass in the House and barely avoided it in the Senate. My point is, I think some of these people are leaning towards Congressman Weiner resigning because he's not as popular as say Bill Clinton. Surely that would help the influence of a resignation.
Even Barack Obama stated publicly that a resignation is needed mainly to ensure his own election isn't jeopardized. Ask yourself, is it fair for 'constituents' to make that type of decision for you? I mean sure he's a public figure but does this really affect his performance legislating?
Let's not mistake this as some deplorable act, unforgivable by the most forgiving of men. It's natural and unfortunately for him, he had a brain fart and exposed himself. People express themselves in this manner a lot and still manage to keep their jobs, why not Weiner? Then again lying about whether or not it was really you is something I do not condone on a personal level.
The most important thing to consider is - how does this actually affect the American people. A population that generally doesn't care about politics as evidenced by this opinion piece from a said conservative-leaning publication. Let's remember also this is not an illegal act, he didn't send his johnson to a minor or anything like that, and we've had that before haven't we? He's not undercover gay, and we've had that before definitely. He didn't steal campaign money to cover up a scandal, like John Edwards did. He didn't start the financial crisis, he didn't botch healthcare, and he's not the reason why we're still in a recession. Chew on that.
